POLICE officers investigating thefts of mountain bikes from people using tracks at Ashton Court and Leigh Woods in North Somerset have made four arrests.
Yesterday, the Evening Post reported that unsuspecting mountain bikers were being followed home by thieves who then break into their sheds or homes to steal their expensive bikes.
Avon & Somerset police confirmed that 28 thefts had been reported in March 2012, where bicycles had been taken from homes in Bristol after the owners had been cycling in the Leigh Woods or Ashton Court area.
Offenders are targeting houses and sheds, breaking padlocks and in some cases entry was gained by ripping out the shed roof.
To counter the problem, police have increased patrols in the area and their efforts have led to arrests. A spokesman for Avon & Somerset police said: "Four people aged 20, 19, 19 and 17 years-old have been arrested on suspicion of burglary and are currently on police bail pending further inquiries."
The force has also been part of a joint project to support work in tackling bike theft with a crime reduction viral video campaign, featuring a bike expert from New York who grades the locking techniques of cyclists.

Any cyclist who notices suspicious behaviour is urged to call the police on the force's non-emergency number, 101.
